An Overview of the Indiana Department of Health and Welfare

The Indiana Department of Health and Healthcare is devoted to providing quality health care services to Hoosiers. The Hoosier State provides all the services required by the residents of this state. These include but are not limited to, mental health, medical and dental care, nursing care, hospice care, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. For individuals who may be interested in purchasing health insurance, there is an individual policy available for individuals. In addition, there is group coverage available in some cases.

The Hoosier State offers state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for hospitals and other medical institutions. The Hoosier State has numerous hospitals that provide comprehensive treatment for individuals and families. For those needing specialized care, several hospitals to offer services through their Selective Services Programs. These include but are not limited to, cardiology and orthopedics, psychiatry, pathology, radiology, and dialysis centers.

One can find a full array of outpatient and inpatient care services here. Hoosier hospitals feature four main patient care areas, including specialty departments such as adult day surgery, pediatric surgery, burn unit, and pediatrician’s office. A family doctor serves the needs of all family members and has the responsibility of seeing that the entire medical team is well educated and up-to-date on the issues affecting each patient’s health.

The Indiana Department of Health and Healthcare also has a large Aging pediatrics department. This department is charged with providing quality services to people of all ages with various kinds of diseases and conditions. These include but are not limited to, nursing home facilities for adults, assisted living facilities for seniors, mental health and behavioral health centers, geriatric and substance abuse treatment centers, and hospital outpatient departments.

Those in need of mental health and behavioral health services can turn to the Addiction Treatment Center. They are accredited by the National Association of Mental Health Treatment. This is one of the largest of its kind in the Midwest and is located in Indianapolis. Those looking for substance abuse treatment can turn to the Indiana Department of Health and Welfare.

The Department of Health and Welfare offers a number of long term and short term mental health services including alcohol and drug abuse programs, comprehensive assessments for patients who are mentally ill or emotionally unstable, and treatment in a facility devoted to these particular groups. In addition, there are over forty different patient care units including home health care units, specialty units, inpatient and outpatient treatment centers. There are also respite centers that provide services to families and individuals to help them deal with traumatic events and emergencies.

The Indiana State Department of Health and Welfare offers patient education programs for all ages. They feature brochures that explain various topics including immunizations and preventative health care. If you are suffering from an injury or illness that affects your ability to work, you will be able to obtain necessary workers’ compensation benefits from the Indiana Department of Health and Welfare. Because of the nature of the program, it may take several months for an individual who has suffered an injury or illness to be able to work again. For this reason, the Department of Health and Welfare monitors cases of worker’s compensation claims that have been filed.

The Indiana State Department of Health and Welfare offers a 24-hour helpline for patients who call because they are in immediate pain or fear for their safety. If the patient has any questions about their condition, they should call the helpline immediately. There are also psychologists on staff at the Department of Health and Welfare that can give patients advice for their recovery. In addition to the helpline and psychologist staff members, the Department of Health and Welfare also has therapists and care giving nurses that are trained to treat emotional and mental conditions.
